A Brief History
The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection began as an idea and a need for a ministry in Northwest Oklahoma City. We began as a core group of 50 people in February 1961; services were held for over two years in the KOCO-TV studios.
A permanent location was realized in 1963 with the purchase of land on Northwest Expressway, west of Meridian Avenue. The first service in the new church was held on July 6', 1963. In April 1967, Resurrection became a parish; the Rev. Paul Kendall was the first rector.
Because of membership growth and the need for additional space, land was purchased at the present location. The first worship service at the present location was held on January 29, 1989, officiated by the Rev. Richard James.
Currently, under the guidance of the Rev. Michael A. Jasper, the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection continues to grow and meet the increasing demands of a thriving community.
Over forty years of spiritual and physical growth have been celebrated and our prayer is that God will continue to pour out His blessings and give us a chance to do His will.
The Episcopal Church
The Episcopal Church is a part of the worldwide Anglican Communion which numbers 60 million members in over 100 countries. We are often described as being a "bridge church" because we include the traditions and heritage of both our Catholic and Protestant past.
We are a Historic Church and a Liturgical Church. Our worship is grounded in the traditions and patterns of an historic church based upon the teachings of the Apostles. We are a Bible Church, believing Holy Scripture is the Word of God which continues to speak to us in our everyday life as we witness to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Our name Episcopal comes from the Greek word for Bishop and the historic three-fold ministry of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons. We are also a church that practices toleration and inclusion, attempting to bring all people into a relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
If you are seeking a community of faith that does not have all the answers but is attempting to learn and listen to the voice of God; if you want to feel free to ask questions; if you want to have a voice in the life of the community, then this may be a good place to continue your spiritual journey.
